Tote bags are the easiest custom product to buy badly. They all look the same in a photo — a rectangle of cream canvas with something printed on it — and the difference between one that lasts five years and one that sags after a month is almost entirely in details you can’t see from a listing image.

Here’s what actually separates a good tote from a cheap one, whether you buy from us or anyone else.
The four things that decide whether a tote survives
1. What the canvas is actually made of
“Canvas” isn’t a specification. It can mean 100% cotton, a poly-cotton blend, or something closer to a thin sheet with a texture printed on it. Cotton canvas holds its shape when the bag is empty, takes a print cleanly, and softens rather than pills as it wears.
Ours are 100% cotton canvas in natural, undyed cream. Undyed matters more than it sounds: dye adds a step where colour can transfer onto a white shirt in the rain.
2. Where the straps are stitched
This is the one that fails. A tote carries its entire load through two seams, and cheap bags attach the straps with a single line of stitching a couple of centimetres down from the top hem. Put a laptop and a water bottle in and that seam is the only thing between you and the pavement.
Look for straps stitched well down into the body of the bag, with a double row. Ours are double-stitched, which is the difference between a bag you trust with a laptop and one you don’t.
3. Whether the size is honest
A tote that’s too small is useless and a tote that’s too deep swallows your keys forever. The useful range for daily carry is roughly 30cm wide by 36cm tall, with a strap drop around 23cm — long enough to go over a shoulder in a winter coat, short enough that the bag doesn’t swing at your knees.
Those are the measurements we print, and we publish them on every listing because “roomy” means nothing.
4. How the design is applied
A print that sits on top of the fabric as a thick plastic layer will crack along the fold lines within a season. A print that bonds into the fibres moves with the fabric instead of fighting it.
That’s why care instructions matter as a signal: if a seller tells you to avoid ironing directly on the print and skip the dryer, they’re telling you how the print is attached. Ours are hand wash cold, air dry, no bleach, no dry cleaning, and never iron directly on the design.
What “custom” can actually mean
There are three different things people mean by a custom tote, and they cost and take very different amounts of time.
Pick an existing design. Fastest and cheapest. You’re buying a finished product that happens to be made in small runs rather than by the container.
Add a name or a short phrase. Our designs have a personalization field at checkout. Same production time, and it turns a nice bag into a specific gift.
Bring your own artwork. Send a logo or an image and we set it up. This is what most business and event orders are, and it needs a conversation about file quality before anything gets pressed.
Buying totes for a business or an event
If you’re ordering for a market stall, a conference, a team or a shop, a few things change:
- Mixed designs in one run are fine. You don’t have to order forty identical bags.
- Artwork gets checked before printing, not after. A logo that looks fine on a website is often too low-resolution to press at 25cm wide. We flag that before you pay for forty of them.
- There’s no minimum. Order five for a small event or a hundred for a conference.
- Lead time is the real constraint. Standard production is 1–3 business days, but a large run with custom artwork needs a proper timeline, which we quote up front rather than discovering halfway through.
Why local matters for this specific product
Totes are bulky and light, which is the worst possible combination for shipping. A bag ordered from an overseas print-on-demand service travels a long way in a padded envelope and arrives creased, and if the print is wrong you’re posting it back across an ocean.
Ordering in Toronto means the bag is pressed in North York, checked by a person, and either delivered across the GTA or posted within Canada. If something’s wrong, it’s a conversation rather than an international returns process.
