DTF printing in plain language
DTF stands for Direct to Film. The name sounds technical but the idea is straightforward:
A design is printed onto a special transfer film using professional inks. A powder adhesive is applied and cured. Then the film is heat-pressed onto the garment — bonding the design to the fabric fibres at the level of the thread itself.
The result is a print that’s vibrant, flexible and wash-resistant — one that moves with the fabric instead of sitting on top of it waiting to crack.
How DTF printing is different from other methods
There are several ways to print on a T-shirt. Each has its place:
- Screen printing works beautifully for large runs of simple designs — but it requires expensive setup per colour and doesn’t work economically for small orders or detailed artwork.
- HTV (heat transfer vinyl) is excellent for names, numbers and bold single-colour graphics — think sports jerseys and simple lettering.
- Direct to Garment (DTG) prints ink directly onto the fabric like a regular printer — great for photography-style detail, but the prints can feel stiff and fade faster on dark garments.
- DTF printing hits a sweet spot — full colour, fine detail, works on dark or light fabric, no minimum run size and wash-resistant results. It’s why we use it for all our apparel at PrintMyVibe.
Why DTF prints last longer than cheap alternatives
The durability of a DTF print comes from the adhesive bonding process. When the transfer film is pressed at professional heat and pressure, the ink and adhesive fuse directly with the fabric fibres — they don’t just sit on the surface.
A low-quality heat press, wrong temperature or cheap transfer paper breaks this bond. The result is what everyone dreads — cracking at the design edges, peeling from the corners or colours that fade to nothing after a handful of washes.

What DTF printing looks and feels like on a real T-shirt
A well-executed DTF print has a slightly raised texture — you can feel the design with your fingertip. It’s not as flat as a screen print and not as stiff as a cheap iron-on transfer.
The colour is vibrant and accurate. Fine details — thin lines, small text, complex gradients — come through clearly. And the print flexes with the fabric instead of cracking when you stretch the garment.

How to care for a DTF-printed T-shirt
A DTF print is durable — but a little care keeps it looking its best:
- Wash inside out on a gentle or cold cycle
- Avoid bleach or harsh detergents
- Tumble dry on low or hang to air dry
- Don’t iron directly on the print — iron inside out or place a cloth between iron and design
