October is the one month a year when a black cat on a shirt is both a Halloween costume and just a shirt. That’s a useful window, and it’s the reason our black cat designs move in early October and then keep moving in November, long after the pumpkins are in the green bin.
Cat gifts have a specific failure mode, though. Most of what’s sold is a cartoon cat with a pun on it, bought by someone who doesn’t have a cat, for someone who does. It gets a polite laugh and lives in a cupboard.
PrintMyVibe presses mugs and tees by hand in North York, Toronto. Here’s what actually gets used.
Black cat, October, and why it works past Halloween
The black cat is the only Halloween motif that survives the season. A skeleton on a mug is a two-week object. A black cat is a cat.

Black Cat Vibes reads as Halloween in October and as a graphic tee the rest of the year, which is the whole argument. It’s the design people find us for most often, and it’s the one to buy if you want something that gets worn in February.
If you want the season more explicitly, the Spooky Season tote carries a cobweb, a spider on a thread and an orange crescent moon — and then quietly goes on being a grocery bag.
The cat mug question
“Cat mug” is a phrase people search and then regret acting on, because most cat mugs are aimed at the idea of a cat owner rather than at an actual one.
The difference is whether the design acknowledges what living with a cat is actually like.
Coffee & Cats, in the grid above, is for the household where the 6am routine involves a cat on the counter whether anyone consented to that or not. It’s the honest version of the cat mug.
For a genuinely personal one, we do custom cat portraits from a photo. That’s the version that stops being a novelty item, because it’s their cat rather than a cat.
Getting a cat portrait that actually looks like the cat
Cats are harder to photograph than dogs, and the reasons are structural rather than behavioural.
Dark fur eats detail. A black cat photographed in a dim room is a cat-shaped void. Shoot near a window on an overcast day — that soft, even light is the only thing that separates black fur from black shadow. Never use flash on a dark cat; it flattens the face and turns the eyes into two discs.
The eyes carry the whole portrait. If the eyes are sharp, the rest can be soft and it still works. If they aren’t, nothing rescues it. Zoom in on the eyes on your phone before you send the file — if it goes to mush there, it’ll go to mush on the mug.
Get down to their level. A photo from standing height gives you the top of a head and a lot of floor.
Fill the frame with head and shoulders. A mug print is about 8cm wide. A cat across a room is a nice photo and a terrible mug.
Send the original file. Not a screenshot, not something forwarded twice through a messaging app — each of those quietly shrinks the photo. Straight from the camera roll, full size.
We check the file at print size and confirm it with you before anything is pressed. If it won’t hold up, we say so and ask for another rather than shipping something disappointing.

Memorial portraits
A good number of our pet portraits are for animals that have died, and it changes what matters.
Send the photo you love, not the technically best one. If it’s an older or softer photo, tell us — there’s usually something we can do, and if there genuinely isn’t, we’ll say so rather than print something soft. Allow a bit more time than a standard order. A name and a pair of dates, kept small, tends to read better than a long inscription, though that’s a preference and it’s your mug.
The specs, briefly
- Mugs: 11oz ceramic, 325ml, printed both sides, dishwasher and microwave safe, lead-free and BPA-free
- Tees: printed in our North York studio
- Totes: 100% cotton canvas, 30cm x 36cm
- No minimum order, mixed designs in one run are fine
- 1-3 business days in production, then GTA delivery or Canada-wide shipping
- Custom artwork adds an approval step, so start earlier in October if you have a date
Mug designs are baked into the surface rather than stuck on top. There’s no edge to lift — which matters most across a face.
Viby’s note 🐾
Viby’s position, as a mascot with a professional interest in animals: the photo where the cat looks mildly disgusted is the one. Nobody wants the posed shot. They want the face the animal actually makes.
