A mug is a good gift for a boring reason: frequency. A framed print gets looked at occasionally. A mug gets held every single morning — roughly three hundred and fifty times a year, for years. That’s an enormous amount of contact for something that costs less than a round of drinks.

Personalisation is what turns that frequency into meaning. And there are really only three ways to do it well.

PrintMyVibe presses mugs by hand in North York, Toronto. Here’s each of the three, and what to send us. There’s more on how we make them in our guide to custom mugs in Toronto.

1. A name, a date or a phrase

The simplest version, and the one people get wrong most often.

The line between thoughtful and embarrassing is specificity. “World’s Best Dad” is a category — it could be anyone’s dad. Their actual coffee order, the name of the café they go to every Saturday, the year they finally quit drip coffee, the phrase they say constantly and everyone else has learned to anticipate: those are gifts.

Things that reliably land: a first name on its own, a nickname only two people use, a date that means something, a neighbourhood — Leslieville, the Junction, North York. Things that don’t: a long inscription. A mug print is about 8cm wide. Anything over about six words starts shrinking to the point where you have to rotate the mug to read it.

Use the personalization field at checkout for a name or short phrase. Every mug below is 11oz ceramic, printed on both sides, and adding the text doesn’t change the price.

2. A matching pair

Three ways a pair of mugs can match, and they are not equally good.

Identical. Two copies of the same thing. Easy to make, least interesting — you’ve bought someone two of one object.

Two halves of one idea. Each mug carries a different piece of a shared design, and the pair only completes when they’re side by side on the counter. This is the one people actually react to, because you can’t get it by buying two of anything.

Paired but distinct. Same style, same palette, a different character on each. Best when the two people in question are visibly not the same person, which is most couples.

Our sets are built on the second and third patterns.

Better Together is two 11.8oz mugs designed as a pair; Boo-tiful & Hey Booty does the same with a Halloween twist. Both sets are priced as two singles, so you’re not paying a premium for the idea. Happily Married is the one that works perfectly well on its own.

Two practical things nobody mentions. Both mugs in the set are the same size, which sounds obvious and isn’t: marketplace sellers frequently pair an 11oz with a 15oz because that’s what was in stock, and somebody gets the short pour. And both print on both sides, so the design reads the same in either hand — which matters more to left-handed people than most sellers ever consider.

Buy the set when the gift is about the two of them: an anniversary, a wedding, a first apartment. Buy a single when it’s about one person — a birthday, a promotion, a bad month that deserved acknowledging.

3. Their pet’s face

Our most-requested custom job, and the one where the result depends almost entirely on the file you send.

Everyone has seen a bad pet mug: the photo is dark, the animal is slightly out of focus, the background is a beige sofa, and the dog you love arrives on a mug looking like a stranger. That’s almost never the printing.

The photo rules, in order of how much they matter:

  1. Daylight, not flash. A window on an overcast day is the best light you’ll get for free. Flash flattens the face and turns eyes into discs — and it’s fatal on dark fur, where a black cat becomes a cat-shaped void.
  2. Get down to their level. A photo from standing height gives you the top of a head and a lot of floor.
  3. Fill the frame with head and shoulders. A dog across a field is a lovely photo and a terrible mug.
  4. Check the eyes are sharp. If the eyes are in focus the portrait works even when the rest is soft. If they aren’t, nothing rescues it.
  5. Plain-ish background. A wall, a floor, grass, a blanket — all fine.
  6. Send the original file. Not a screenshot, not something forwarded twice through a messaging app. Each of those quietly shrinks the photo.

The self-test: open the photo and zoom in on the eyes. If it goes to mush there, it’ll go to mush on the mug. We check it at print size and confirm with you before anything is pressed — if it won’t hold up, we ask for another rather than shipping something disappointing.

No usable photo? Start from a breed design and add the pet’s name. A clean illustration with the right name usually beats a blurry photo of the right dog, and it’s considerably faster.

Memorial portraits. A good number of these are for animals that have died. Send the photo you love rather than the technically best one, tell us it’s a memorial, and allow extra time. If an older file genuinely won’t hold up we’ll say so rather than print something soft. A name and a pair of dates, kept small, tends to read better than a long inscription.

If you’d rather not personalise at all

Sometimes you don’t know the person well enough, and a generic-but-good mug beats a personalised-but-wrong one. From the first grid above: Toronto Canada and True North Maple Leaf are the safe picks for someone who’s recently moved here, and Muskoka and Canoe Life cover the household whose real home is a cottage they visit eleven times a year.

The specs

  • 11oz ceramic — 325ml, 9.5cm tall, 8.2cm across, 12.7cm including the handle
  • Sets are 11.8oz each, two per set
  • Printed both sides, with the design baked into the surface so there’s no layer to peel
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe, lead-free and BPA-free
  • No minimum order
  • 1-3 business days in production, then GTA delivery or Canada-wide shipping
  • Custom artwork adds an approval step — allow 2-3 days more

Hand washing keeps the colours richest over years. The dishwasher won’t lift the print; it just dulls the finish faster over hundreds of cycles.

One honest note: we don’t gift wrap. The gift boxes in our product photos are styling, and everything ships in protective packaging for you to wrap yourself.

Viby’s note 🐾

Viby’s personalisation test: could this mug belong to anyone else? If yes, go smaller and more specific. The best mug we ever printed had four words on it that meant nothing to anybody except two people.

Personalized mug questions, answered

$28.99 for a single 11oz ceramic mug printed on both sides, or $56.99 for a set of two 11.8oz mugs designed as a pair. Adding a name or short phrase in the personalization field doesn’t change the price, and there’s no minimum order.

A name, a nickname, a date, a neighbourhood, a short phrase, or a photo — including pet portraits, which are our most requested custom job. Keep text under about six words: a mug print is roughly 8cm wide, and longer inscriptions shrink to the point where you have to rotate the mug to read them.

Yes. Send the original file from your camera roll — daylight rather than flash, taken at the animal’s eye level, head and shoulders filling the frame, eyes in focus. We check it prints clearly at mug size and confirm with you before pressing.

Open it on your phone and zoom in on the eyes. If they go to mush there, they’ll go to mush on the mug. Screenshots and photos forwarded through messaging apps come out smaller, so always send the original.

Yes — both are 11.8oz, so nobody gets the short pour. Marketplace sellers often pair an 11oz with a 15oz because that’s what was in stock; ours are made as a pair.

No. The design is baked into the mug’s surface rather than stuck on top, so there’s no edge to lift. Hand washing keeps the colours brightest over the years, but the dishwasher won’t take the print off.

1-3 business days in production, then local GTA delivery or Canada-wide shipping. A fully custom design such as a pet portrait adds an artwork approval step, so allow 2-3 days more and message us first if you’re working to a date.

Yes — no minimum, and mixed designs and different names within one run are fine. Send a quantity and we’ll quote it with a real timeline rather than a guess.
